My son started Kindergarten this year so it was high-time I gave him a proper big boy room…on a budget! I spent around $50 to give his room a little overhaul. With moving as much as we do, our furniture gets scratched up like you wouldn’t believe so my main part of the makeover was to re-paint his dresser. I choose Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Napoleonic Blue because it reminds of a “superhero” blue. If you’re unfamiliar with chalk paint, you can check out my initial post about using it and all my tips here. Finishing a piece like this used about 1/3 of a can, which is about $12 worth of chalk paint. I already had the clear and dark wax.
This is the dresser before…I got so excited to paint I forgot to take a before pic with all the drawers in but you get the idea. Check out the close up of how scratched the top is!
I did two coats of chalk paint, allowing it to dry completely in between. I had always thought this was a solid wood dresser but it’s not so I did have a little trouble with the paint sticking in spots but since I wanted it to look distressed it wasn’t too big of an issue.
After the two coats, I used a sanding block to distress further. And then I did two coats of clear wax. After I waxed, the paint stayed just fine and it’s now nice and durable. Then I did the dark wax. The key is to use a tiny amount. A little of the dark wax goes a very long way.
And that was it. Chalk Paint is almost too easy to use…and that’s why I’m obsessed with it!
As for the rest of his little room, I kept it simple due to time and budget restraints…
The Minecraft and Star Wars posters were $5 each at Target. (I thought I bought Spiderman and Avengers posters but these were in the wrong slots…and he loved them…so up they went). The Spiderman wall decal is by Roommates and I bought it on Amazon for $17.99.
The following aren’t new but here’s the info on them anyway: the Trundle Bed was a $100 Craigslist find, I made the Chevron Pillow Covers, and the Cars Bedspread was from Walmart for $25 if I recall correctly).
Eventually, I want to add his name over the closet and make a quilt for his bed…but the days are short and my to-do lists are long…so for now, it’s good enough and he’s loves it.
