Tutorial: The Halloween Tulle and Ribbon Tutu

Cute right?  I know tutu tutorials are all over the web but most use elastic waistbands, so I wanted to show you how easy and cute it is to use some yardage of what’s typically used for crochet headbands.  For each model’s tutu, you’ll need two measurements: (1) waist and (2) length from waist to knee.

Here’s what you’ll need for each tutu:

-2 yards shiny tulle (I used 1 yard of each color)

-Ribbon (about 5 yards)

-Crochet Headband (length: about 1.5″ less than your model’s waist measurement)
-Rotary Cutter and Mat (tulle is easy to cute into lots of rows with these tools!)

Let’s get started:

Cut your tulle into strips that measure 4″ by 2x the model’s waist-to-knee measurement.  So, if your model’s waist-to-knee measurement is 10″ you’ll cut 4″ x 20″ strips.  Lots of them.

Cut your crochet waistband 1.5″ less than your model’s waist measurement.  So, if her waist is 20″ cut the waistband length of 18.5″.  Sew securely with a 1/2″ inseam.  Now your waistband is 2″ smaller than your model’s waist.

Now, grab a seat and slide the waistband up your thigh and we’ll start tying on the tulle.  We’ll put one strip of tulle in each hole along one side of the waistband.  Pull the middle of the strip through so the loop is facing toward your foot (this way the knot will sit on top and look nice).  Put the ends through and pull.  See picture for this description to make more sense!

 

Keep doing this alternating colors through each hole until you’ve gone all the way around.

You could stop here but it’s way more fun and add some ribbon.  I made three of these and I used different ribbon for each and a combo for one.  Cut your ribbon to be the same length as your tulle strips and tie on in the same manner as the tulle on crochet row above, only this time skip every other hole.

You’re done!!  I love how the one ribbon with the shiny strip down the middle looks.

My nieces are coming to visit for Halloween to celebrate my 30th birthday (yes, I’m a Halloween baby!) so I’m working on coordinating appliqued t-shirts to match for the girls and my daughter to wear during the day on Halloween.  I’m also working on a t-shirt for my son so we can get pictures of all the kids together since they only get to see each other once or twice a year so I’ll do a simple tutorial on those once they are complete.
